An initiative of United Way of Marion County
Another WoW Evening!
Women of Worth's asian-themed event, at the Holiday Inn and Suites on May 9th, drew a full ball room of some of the most community-minded women in Ocala. No one went home empty-handed as baskets of Ocala's Favorite Things were distributed to each and every attendee. Bidding on auction items was higher than expected and many unique items were donated by Lenscrafters, Ocala Volvo, Lemieux Diamonds, Nancy Porter, Coconut Jacks among other merchants. Special entertainment by Marvin Perez of Ocala Models and Talent and Kimmy LaGreca of ARC and OMT drew a standing ovation. Ocala Volvo was a Signature Sponsor for the evening. WoW stands for Women Of Worth. And worth is not defined exclusively as monetary worth.
A group of women came together recently to launch a powerful force for good in our community. They are the WoW Steering Committee, headed up by Co-Chairs Janet Kent and Manal Fakhoury, and composed of Julie Shealy, Jane Fontaine, Phyllis Ewers, and Nancy Vandeven.
Women of Worth now includes more than 130 members. A member is a woman who is already a contributor to United Way but who also gives at least $250 annually, over ten years, to WoW.
WoW members have learned about community issues over the past year and are ready to decide, within the general mission of United Way of Marion County, how to focus their dollars on a special area of interest. Worth brings into play the caring, feminine side of women while at the same time their strength, both in terms of resolve and financial resources. Women traditionally care for their children and for the elderly of their families and the community. What a perfect group to focus special resources to alleviate human suffering in Marion County!
