Tocqueville Society

Be a Pillar in the Heritage of Giving

The Tocqueville Society was created by United Way of America in 1972. The name serves in part as a legacy to 19th century French philosopher Alexis de Tocqueville's deep admiration for the voluntary spirit of advancing the common good, a spirit he observed during a visit to America and enthusiastically documented in his writing. Today, over 398 local United Way Tocqueville Societies stand as strong symbols of support for initiatives and programs that improve lives while building stronger, healthier and more vibrant communities.

Our Society

United Way of Marion County's Tocqueville Society is designed to deepen the understanding, commitment and support of individuals, as well as to honor their generous commitment to service throughout the Marion County. The Society consists of individuals who have rendered outstanding voluntary service in their communities and contribute annual gifts of $10,000 and above. A variety of commitment levels include national recognition as well as social, networking, community and business-related activities.

In 2001, the Society named its highest award in honor of Alex M. "Papa" Collins Sr., United Way of Marion County's first Campaign chairman. The Tocqueville Society recognized these individuals whose outstanding leadership and generosity inspire other members to share their vision of the future. The Alex M. Collins Sr. Alexis de Tocqueville Award was presented to Kulbir Ghumman, a charter member of the Society, in 2001, to Janet Kent in 2002, Whit and Diane Palmer in 2003, Drs. Riadh and Manal Fakhoury in 2004, Harvey and Nancy Vandeven in 2005, Ron & Phyllis Ewers in 2006, Bill & Cyndi Chambers in 2007, and Jane Fontaine in 2008.
